A properly designed random wire antenna used in conjunction with a good ground radial or counterpoise system and a wide-range "tuner" can make an excellent HF multiband antenna for portable or emergency use.

In this well-written article, we learn how to choose the optimal lengths for multiband operation.  The author supplies several helpful programs to get you started as well as excellent graphic presentations of the lengths you should avoid.

The basic guidelines are simple:

Make your random wire antenna at least 1/4 wavelength for each band you plan to use.

Be sure to complete the antenna system with a ground radial or counterpoise system.

Be prepared to use a wide-range antenna '"tuner" if you want multiband capability.  The antenna "tuners" built into many current transceivers will be unable to handle the high SWR encountered on lengths approaching a 1/2 wavelength.

Another alternative to the random wire antenna is the W3EDP antenna described in the March 1936 edition of "QST" (page 36). You can google "W3EDP antenna" and find several articles (including one from this blog) discussing this antenna.

If you can't see the video, please insert this title URL into your browser search box: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aeNHIQ_j4Dk This well-produced and richly illustrated tutorial on the classic G5RV HF Dipole Antenna was presented to the Brandon Amateur Radio Society in Brandon, Florida in 2017 by Bernie Huth (W4BGH).  Bernie does an excellent job of  explaining the pros and cons of this popular HF antenna from the late Louis Varney (G5RV).  Although Varney envisioned his design primarily as a 3/2 wavelength antenna for the 20 meter Amateur Radio band, radio amateurs have used the antenna for multiband use.  The G5RV is an excellent choice for the 20 meter band.  Performance on other HF Amateur Radio bands is good enough to qualify as stand alone HF antenna if you can only erect one HF antenna.
